About Rose

Where did your love of painting start?

Rose Madeleine the Animal Artist painting animals

As a child Rose had a passion for drawing and painting animals. After not pursuing she made a life change in her late 40’s to finally enjoy a creative life, much to her delight!

Where does your inspiration come from?

Rose’s painting is driven by her love for nature, the countryside, wildlife and animals. From these subjects there is always an abundance of inspiration.

Animals have always played a huge part in her life and will continue to do so.

Why animal paintings?

Animals simply bring happiness in to our lives. They are compassionate, devoted, loving friends.

Rose’s miniature schnauzer is her dog of a lifetime who is full of character and the best companion she could wish for. Always by her side and often found sat under her easel, snuggled up while she paints.

What elements of country life do you enjoy the most?

Growing up in the country it has a special place in your heart. A rural lifestyle becomes a way of life that is ingrained.

Exploring the countryside and rural habitats. The changing seasons are incredible and in particular nature’s patterns, shapes and colours. Rose loves Spring with the buds of new life and Autumn offering rich colours and tones. It is just delightful to watch the hedgerows change and provide blackberries (for crumble) then sloes (for gin)! Quite simply it is the connection to nature, it is good for the soul.

From donning the muddy wellies to walk Merryn, to riding and mucking out ponies. Dogs and horses have always featured highly and as a consequence fresh air and outdoor life prevails.

Which is your preferred animal portrait from your collection?

When painting the artist gets so engrossed in the subject that even if you have not met them you feel as though you know their personality. Their markings become really familiar too. Whether it’s bringing out the character of a pig, creating a sleeping cat or portraying an underwater seal, Rose loves to capture the unique nature of the animal she is painting.

Pony on the mining trail in the heather

So not easy to choose one, it would have to be ‘Prince of the Glen’ the stag, as he looks so regal. Also the highland calf as the colours compliment each other, the coat of the calf and the purple heather are beautiful together.

Who is your favourite artist?

Without hesitation Sir A.J. Munnings. Horses run through Rose’s blood and he captured the very essence of them superbly. He was a master. Still hoping to visit his museum, having had a taster from a small exhibition of his work on display in Cornwall, post the film ‘Summer in February’ which was wonderful.

How do you see the future of Rose Madeleine Art progressing?

Intentions are to continue evolving as an artist personally and expand the range of animal paintings to cater to more customers. So keep the paint brushes going and then look to produce gifts too, tea towels initially and keep moving forwards.

Meeting customers, pet owners, farmers, photographers, fellow traders and other professionals builds a friendly community around Rose Madeleine Art which is comforting and enjoyable. Long may this continue.

The trade stand will go out to country fairs and events as it is always nice to meet people face to face. Depending on what is requested and popular who knows what the future holds, but it is exciting!

Easel ‘painting in progress’

Rose usually creates several wildlife and animal paintings at a time alternating between them with acrylic paint then working in layers, adding ink, pencils, pastels and charcoal, depending on the subject.

Moreover, Rose likes to experiment with texture and techniques often using a feather, stick or wire to get the required look. Anything is possible and all are unique.
